AI and machine learning tools are rapidly transforming the nonprofit sector, for better or for worse. According to fundraising expert Cherian Thomas, AI is already subtly affecting donor experiences and nonprofit operations every day. The question is whether AI will ultimately revolutionize fundraising for the better or compromise the human connections at its heart.
Thomas believes AI will be a panacea if nonprofits are thoughtful and judicious in how they implement these powerful tools.
AI can enhance the capabilities of nonprofit teams by automating tedious tasks like data cleaning, allowing fundraisers to focus on building relationships. Chatbots and voice assistants can also improve donor experiences by quickly answering simple questions or facilitating transactions. However, AI may be perilous if nonprofits become overly reliant on technology or use it to replace human fundraisers altogether.
The future of fundraising is undoubtedly AI-powered, but the human touch still matters most.
AI tools can help nonprofits work smarter and connect with more donors, but only people can demonstrate empathy, cultivate trust, and inspire lifelong supporters. “The AI will never be able to sit in front of someone…and be able to have those conversations…build those relationships,” Thomas says. AI is a means rather than an end.
For small nonprofits without technical expertise, AI can seem out of reach. But “democratized data” platforms are providing easy-to-use AI tools for organizations of all sizes. From chatbots and data analytics to content and campaign generators, powerful AI applications are becoming simple and affordable.
Fundraisers should embrace AI to enhance their practice, not replace it. By choosing AI tools that amplify human capabilities and judgment, nonprofits can harness technology’s promise without compromising the vital human connections at the heart of their mission. The future is human and AI, together.
